For Love Or Money?

Career minor leaguer Dirk Hayhurst plays baseball, formerly for the Tampa Bay Rays. He’s also an author, speaker and currently a full-time video game player.

Bullpen GospelsHe doesn’t love what he does for a living. Sure, he’s paid to play a game many of us played as kids, but it’s a job to him. It’s what he’s best at, makes money doing and allows him to do what he really loves–write.

Write he does. He has a blog, a book he wrote during road trips and a wife who seems infected by the same writing bug that has him under its spell.

Did I mention he’s also a minor-league baseball player? That’s his day job. His gig consists of standing 60′, 6″ away from guys holding a wooden stick, and his task, for the most part, is to throw a ball made of leather and twine past the guy. Most fans would consider this an absolute dream. But not Hayhurst. He’s a writer that makes his living playing baseball, certainly not the other way around.

For everyone “stuck” in a day job or trapped in a cubicle toiling for the man, let this be a lesson to you: we all have dreams. We all have desires that look to pull us away from whatever daily doldrums we’re looking to escape from.

Now, and don’t tell Josh Strebel that I said this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Josh doesn’t LOVE creating the best WordPress managed hosting in the world. He and Sally LOVE helping people solve problems. It’s good to like your job and to save your love for more important things.

Don’t think that means the Strebels are just going through the motions. He and Sally show up, day after day, and work their absolute hardest to provide the best product possible to their customers, just like Hayhurst does to his employers and fans.

Sometimes you have to do a lot of what you like to do some of what you love. And that’s okay. The key is to accept it, run with it and work your absolute hardest to make all your dreams come true.
